Be sure to tune in to our YouTube Channel here for two more episodes in our new Uplink live stream series coming to you this week, an Earth Day Special and an audience with a truly legendary TV writer and producer who’s worked on everything from Star Trek: Voyager to Heroes and beyond!

It all starts on Wednesday 22nd April at 5:30pm BST/6:30 CEST when we’ll be marking the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with a special dedicated programme for Uplink 05, featuring two experts who check the pulse of our planet. Marine Applications Expert at The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Hayley Evers-King and Head of Earth and Mission Science at the European Space Agency, Mark Drinkwater.

British meteorological scientist Hayley Evers-King works at EUMETSAT in Germany’s Darmstadt. Made up of 30 member states (independent from the EU), EUMETSAT uses meteorological satellites to monitor and detect climate change. They also use satellite weather forecasting to predict potential weather extremes. Hayley works with the Copernicus Sentinels, in particular Sentinel-3, which measures sea surface temperature and colour to support ocean forecasting systems, which inform and support environmental and climate monitoring. Hayley’s specialist area of expertise is ocean colour, in the context of climate and ocean health – such as ocean acidification – in relation to the carbon cycle. As we know, Earth is a blue planet: 70% of its surface is covered by oceans – so the wellbeing of our seas is of crucial importance to climate change.

Mark Drinkwater works for ESA at ESTEC in The Netherlands. Mark is Head of the Earth and Mission Science Division, which is responsible for all of the space agency’s vast Earth Observation missions. He studies how Earth is affected by climate and is an expert on the cryosphere, (all of the frozen water part of the planet’s surface).

Uplink 06 takes places on Friday 24th April at 6pm BST/7pm CEST and we’re excited to be hosting a true legend of sci-fi: screenwriter and TV producer, Bryan Fuller, who has left an indelible thumbprint on our imaginations for for decades. With an illustrious career spanning back to the 90s, Bryan has worked as writer and executive producer on the Star Trek series Voyager and Deep Space Nine and he is also the co-creator of Star Trek: Discovery. He is also creator of the TV series Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, and American Gods. So set your calendars, and prepare to beam in for what’s sure to be a fascinating exploration of the Fullerverse!
