Join us on Thursday 22nd October for a very special episode of Uplink with legendary NASA Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. We’ll be live from 7pm (BST) / 8pm (CEST) here (don’t forget to subscribe).

For anyone who has seen the Hollywood movie Apollo 13, Fred ‘Freddo’ Haise – who was portrayed by the late Bill Paxton – should need no introduction. Along with Commander Jim Lovell and Command Module Pilot, the late Jack Swigert, Lunar Module Pilot Fred was part of the three man crew who overcame the odds to return safely back to Earth. In 1970, Apollo 13 was the intended third NASA moon landing mission when the flight was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module failed.

Fred and the rest of the crew will be forever inextricably linked to the Apollo 13 lunar mission, but there’s a lot more to the retired 86-year-old’s career and life. Fred grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi. After graduating High School he intended to become a journalist but instead joined the US Navy and became a jet fighter pilot – despite being apprehensive of flying! He later flew for the USAF and joined NASA as a civilian flight pilot.

Fred served as back-up Lunar Module Pilot for both Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 prior to his Apollo 13 flight. Following his return from Apollo 13, Fred was back-up Commander for Apollo 19 before the Apollo program was cancelled because of budgetary cuts. Fred then served as a test pilot on the Space Shuttle program in 1977 before leaving NASA in 1979. He then worked as a test pilot for US aircraft engineering corporation, Grumman, before retiring in 1996.

A highly decorated serviceman and pilot, Fred has been awarded countless accolades. He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Aerospace Walk of Honor in 1995. In 1997, he was also one of 24 Apollo astronauts inducted into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame.

We are honoured to welcome Fred to Space Rocks Uplink livestream. Join us on Thursday at 7pm (BST) / 8pm (CEST) to watch and join in at our Youtube channel. You can also catch past episodes of Uplink and subscribe for news about forthcoming editions.
