UPLINK 47: SPACE SOUNDS

Join us on Thursday 6th May for Uplink 46 with musician/producer Laura Kidd and multi-instrumentalist J. Willgoose Esq., founding member of the alternative band, Public Service Broadcasting. We’ll be talking about their unique use of space as musical source material. Blasting off at 8pm BST / 9pm CEST / 3pm EDT so set yourself a reminder here (and don’t forget to subscribe).

Laura Kidd is a music producer, songwriter and indie rock recording artist based in Bristol, UK who works under the  solo project name of  Penfriend. With her time split between writing, recording and performing in her home studio The Launchpad, making her critically acclaimed podcast series Attention Engineer and heading up a vibrant online community, Laura is on a mission to create supportive spaces of all kinds for those who need them, gently encouraging creativity in everyone who crosses her path. Her new album Exotic Monsters – which uses samples from ESA’s ESTEC facility – is out on 21st May.

J. Willgoose Esq. is the original member of alternative/indie band Public Service Broadcasting, known for sampling old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material. The band have released three albums, Inform-Educate-Entertain (2013); The Race for Space (2015); and Every Valley (2017). The Race for Space was supported by two shows at the National Space Centre in Leicester to celebrate the album’s launch. The album charted just outside the top 10 in 11th place in the UK in its release week and reaching Number 1 in the UK Independent Charts for that week. A follow-up EP Sputnik/Korolev was released at the end of 2015. In 2019, Public Service Broadcasting performed a specially commissioned new arrangement of The Race for Space on 25 July 2019 in a late-night Prom, joined by London Contemporary Voices and the Multi-Story Orchestra, the performance being shown on BBC television the following night.
